on keeping quiet

In the years leading up to America's Revolutionary War, a group of persons calling themselves the Sons of Liberty cried foul of the corruption and abuse they suffered under British rule. Among the patriots was Samuel Adams, whose pamphlets, along with Paine's book Common Sense, helped convince the colonials that sharp rebellion against tyranny was preferable to dull suffering at the hands of tax-hungry bureaucrats. Time heals all wounds; it also obscures the lessons of the past. Such is the uniformity in America today, such is the average citizen's conformity to rigid social norms, that we resemble bad clones of worse stereotypes more than we do unique individuals. The lies repeated in person and in commercials by corporations, newscasters, politicians, and pastors have convinced large numbers of formerly stout-hearted Ynki that buying foods in bulk and abandoning humble personal development for brash football fandom leads to Happiness, that it's OK to hate brown people who hopped a fence in order to pick lettuce in Arizona for fourteen hours a day, and that everything in life will be easy so long as one worships a bearded White god while in the presence of one's nit-picking, judgmental neighbors.

A quote from 1984 by George Orwell came through on the tumblrbot recently, one as chilling as it was accurate. “Heavy physical work,” Orwell wrote, “the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizons of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working hours or shorter rations. And when they did become discontented, as they sometimes did, their discontentment led nowhere, because being without general ideas, they could only focus it on petty grievances.” Few authors have with greater accuracy predicted that Americans by the hundreds of thousands would sacrifice personal independence and self respect for consumption-oriented wage slavery.

While reviewing the pieces I wrote that are critical of contemporary American society, I realized that many of the dangers I spoke about were methods implemented purposefully in order to keep the American people docile, content, and in the dark. (“They who sacrifice Liberty for safety deserve neither.” Source unknown.) If I keep going along my current alarmist path, I may well be singled out for reeducation and forcibly lobotomized. Far better were it for me to fall into my pigeon hole along with everyone else, rack up personal debt, watch hours of television every day, eat fast food, and drive my car regularly; far better were it for me to dance the zombie dance of the blissfully aloof rather than bicycling, recycling, learning how to grow my own crops, running my household on solar power, and dialing back my consumerism to the point where I am clothed and fed but little else. I refuse, moreover, to buy chocolates on Valentine's day, to say that I support the troops without actually doing anything to support the troops, to let cars take my right-of-way while I am bicycling, to glue an American flag to an article of my clothing, or to participate in the racism that is carefully calculated to keep us little guys fighting each other rather than the conglomerated and incorporated juggernauts that have all but brought this country to its knees. Therefore, in the spirit of our Founding Persons, with thoughts turned to old man Adams and his ilk, I shall keep up this fight until goodness and Happiness have vanquished the forces of hatred and greed, risking Life, Liberty, and sacred Honor to defend this country's founding ideals. Morituri te salutamus, and huzzah.

on a SAR lost

Sons of the American Revolution; free-thinking, independent-minded citizens of America; fellow lovers of Liberty; dear few remaining self-sufficient, self-reliant Yankees:

We may have lost, once and for all, a member whom we once thought it possible to save. It was not enough that he allowed himself to be ruled by such fear as was being spoon-fed to the People in the immediate wake of the 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks. It was not enough that he jumped wholly onto the bandwagon of consumption-oriented market capitalism. It was not enough that he has stocked his home with delicate and costly things in direct violation of the teachings of frugality and compassion attributed to his god Jesus Christ. No, dear brothers of Freedom and sisters of Liberty, I have witnessed with my own eyes his full and complete retreat into madness, his obedient adoption of even the most trivial and poorly-thought-out drivel that tends to slither from the mouths of such politicians as Sarah Palin: he has replaced the compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs with which he once reduced his energy consumption with old-school, incandescent bulbs. Also, he has learned from his wife that it is acceptable to leave the outside windows open for long periods of time while the air-conditioning is on full blast, thus proving to the world his nearly complete lack of self-critical thinking and his nearly total abandonment of the lessons of his childhood when making the little decisions that significantly impact not only his own life but also the wellbeing of every single other person alive today. Neither he nor his wife run surgical emergency operating rooms within the home, nor do they do much more with their eyes that use them to watch television (in this case, literally, the idiot-box); therefore, they do not require immediately-available light in order to save lives or to make the world a better place, only to guide their way from the couch to the refrigerator, and back again; (they therefore have no good reason to need the lights in their home to come to an immediately full brightness and can afford to wait a few moments for CFLs to gain full brightness). This our poor brother's mindset is so alien to our cause of personal hardiness and self-sufficient living, so devoid of hubris, so lacking in self-criticism as to have moved him so very close to the brink of the world of lost causes that I cannot see a way to save his soul from slowly rotting away, unused, inside the dank nether-regions of his unplumbed inner depths. We have lost him, dear siblings in Liberty: lost him to the hype; lost him to the Fear; lost him to the siren-call of false convenience; and lost him to such a mindset that tends to push this nation's problems down the road, kicking the can just far enough into the next generation's territory as to keep it out of sight without actually picking up the can and fucking recycling it.

I have tried speaking, I have tried reasoning, I have tried threats both open and thinly-veiled – all to no avail. Dear friends, fellow Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, if anyone knows how to pull such a fellow as the man described above back from the abyss, back from his blind adherence to the poorly-conceived notions spewing from the suck-holes of our more radical politicians, please contact me or comment on this post, to assist me in my attempts to save this our sibling in Liberty. Please help me, oh dear friends, for I dance with despair, my heart near torn asunder. Mahalo.

on the Second Sons of Liberty

Attention, self-respecting Americans searching, perhaps in vain, for an organization attuned specifically to the concept of Liberty and all that It entails: The time has come for the founding of the Second Sons of Liberty. (See here for information on the original Sons of Liberty.) You are very welcome to comment on this article with suggestions for how best to organize a group of like-minded individuals bent on reestablishing the longstanding but now defunct notion that each free-born American citizen has the duty under not only the Declaration of Independence but also the U.S. Constitution to live her life in such a way as to satisfy her own wants and needs while not at any time, or in any way, infringing upon the Life, Liberty, or Property of any other person or persons.

For too long now have we allowed the aptly-named nanny state to dictate our actions and to try to protect us from ourselves; for too long have we called upon the state and federal governments to enforce prohibitions on the consumption of a great number of stimulating and mood-enhancing substances; for too long have we relied on outside forces to tell us what is good, acceptable, or patriotic, rather than heeding the tender inner voice of Liberty and deciding for ourselves how best to lead our own lives. The original Sons of Liberty, who labored a dozen years before their efforts culminated in a Revolutionary War that brought independence to this fine, broad land, these our brave and selfless predecessors risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred Honor to establish a nation conceived in Liberty; this idea of freedom, so harshly infringed upon by the passage of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, was further eroded by the passage of the Patriot Act of 2001; this notion has all but died from the general American consciousness, replaced by rampant consumerism and its close cousin, unnecessary wastefulness, by automobile-induced sloth, fear-of-the-unknown, over-reliance on “convenience,” and hollow proclamations of this county's supposedly inherent exceptionalism.

It is time for us to retake control of our shared, common future by focusing the national dialogue once again on the power of individual responsibility and the need to respect our shared, common virtues such as frugality, self-sufficiency, minding one's own business, and preserving the environment for the following generations. Please, dear friends, brothers and sisters alike, please secure the Safety and Happiness of the American people by joining us in this effort to found and organize the Second Sons of Liberty (which shall of course be renamed so as not to exclude persons not born male). Our struggle will not be easy, nor will it see a swift or bloodless conclusion, but it is a struggle we must undertake. Let us make sure that our children, and our children's children, are raised in a nation dedicated to little else than making us its citizens Safe and Happy.
